Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.Preferred - Equivalent of four years of high school education.Preferred - One year of full time phlebotomy experience.Preferred - ASCP or equivalent certification.Must pass certification exam within 1 year of hire date when eligible.* Seeks additional assignments/projects during periods of lower than normal work volume. * Performs laboratory QA and checks orders for accuracy (tests, providers, copies) as time allows * Performs DOT and non DOT urine collections when requested following the established guidelines. * Completes annual required courses on time. * Maintains work area, cleans bench, restocks supplies and notifies manager of low stock. Safety policies and procedures will be followed when using chemicals. When handling blood and /or body fluids, Universal Precaution procedures will be followed in order to minimize exposure to infectious diseases. * Complies with established Laboratory and Hospital policies for Universal Precautions and Safety procedures. * Attends all required Safety training programs and can describe his/ her responsibilities related to general safety, department safety, and specific job-related hazards. * Follows all organizational and department policies and procedures. * Under supervision will help in the training of new employees, MTL students and student interns at the hospital in the performance of phlebotomy duties. May also perform work of a higher level in preparation for increased responsibility and may be required to do work of lesser responsibility when the workload of the department se requires. Performs work level of equal skill and responsibility as needed. * Will act as a lab aid and set up Microbiology cultures and process specimens to promote constant workflow. * Will act as a receptionist greet patients, answer phones, files laboratory results, orders and reports, and process reference laboratory reports when not performing phlebotomy procedures. * Helps co-workers when needed and communicates with laboratory departments when needed to ensure an orderly workflow. ![]() * Organizes assigned work and accurately completes workload statistics. * Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions. Ensures timely transport of all patient specimens to lab for testing. * Identifies patients and properly labels specimen tubes. * Performs phlebotomy procedures (veinipuncture, finger sticks, heel sticks, bleeding times) as appropriate for the patient (from age 0 to > 100 years) requiring this procedure. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Responsible for the performance of phlebotomy procedures and non-technical duties in the laboratory, outpatient area and off-site services.
